Jamaican Citizen Admits to Lottery Scam Targeting Elderly Victims
A 22-year-old Jamaican citizen has admitted to participating in a lottery scam that targeted elderly victims in the United States. Daron Murray, 22, pleaded guilty to mail fraud and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.
The scam, which took place between December 2012 and October 2014, involved Murray and others informing elderly victims that they had won the lottery and needed to pay taxes and fees to claim their winnings. One victim, a 92-year-old blind man from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was repeatedly called by Murray and instructed to make advance payments to process paperwork.
The victim sent $20,000 to one of Murray’s conspirators who lived in Albany, New York. Murray faces up to 20 years in prison, 3 years of post-imprisonment supervised release, and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced by United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino on October 3, 2017.
The investigation was conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service and Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant United States Attorney Sean O’Dowd is prosecuting the case.
Murray’s guilty plea is a significant blow to the perpetrators of the scam, which targeted vulnerable elderly victims. The scam is a reminder of the importance of being cautious when receiving unexpected calls or messages claiming to offer large sums of money.
The sentencing of Murray is scheduled to take place on October 3, 2017. The outcome of the case will likely have a significant impact on the victims and their families, who have been affected by the scam.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to identify and prosecute those responsible for the scam. The case highlights the need for increased vigilance and awareness among the public, particularly the elderly, to avoid falling victim to such scams.
