Alex Saunders, a 26-year-old student athlete at Southern University in New Orleans, has been charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.
According to the charges, Saunders, along with his co-conspirators, used false representations and promises to deceive elderly persons and individuals with diminished mental capacities into sending funds via United States mail, private mail carrier, or electronic transfer to Saunders and his co-conspirators.
The funds were then transferred to one of the co-conspirators’ bank accounts in Jamaica.
The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the United States Department of Homeland Security Investigations.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans emphasized that the charges are merely allegations and that the defendant’s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sharan E. Lieberman is prosecuting the case.
If convicted, Saunders faces a maximum term of five years imprisonment, a fine of not more than $250,000, supervised release of three years, and a special assessment of $100.
