Athens, GA – James Edward Monogan, III, a former University of Georgia professor, was sentenced to 90 months in a federal prison to be followed by 10 years of supervised release and fined $40,000 for possessing hundreds of images of child pornography.
Monogan, 39, was found guilty of one count of possession of child pornography after authorities seized several electronic devices from his residence and office in Athens, Georgia. The devices contained 452 images of child pornography and eight videos depicting child sexual exploitation material.
According to authorities, Monogan distributed child pornography on the KIK messaging app in 2019, leading to a federal search warrant being executed at his residence and office. The search warrant was carried out by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
Monogan’s actions have sparked outrage in the community, with authorities emphasizing the severity of the crime. ‘Viewing child pornography is a direct assault against the very children who are being exploited on film,’ said Acting U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary. ‘We will prosecute individuals engaging in this deviant criminal behavior.’
Monogan’s case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program has been instrumental in identifying and rescuing victims of child exploitation.
The case highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in combating child exploitation. ‘Taking Monogan off the streets means that his victims can start to heal, and he can no longer hurt our children or share those dreadful images and details with others,’ said Special Agent in Charge Katrina W. Berger.
Monogan’s case serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, and those who prey on children will be held accountable. The community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Monogan will spend the next 90 months behind bars, and his victims can begin to heal.
