PHOENIX – A Laveen man has been sentenced to federal prison for a brutal assault that left three women seriously injured.
James Flippen Lewis, 28, a member of the Gila River Indian Community, was handed down an 84-month prison sentence by U.S. District Judge Neil V. Wake on Feb. 21, 2017. Lewis will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison term.
The assaults took place in 2013, 2014, and 2015, within the Gila River Indian Community. Lewis pleaded guilty to three counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The three female victims, all members of the Gila River Indian Community, suffered serious bodily injuries during the attacks.
The investigation into Lewis’s crimes was conducted by the Gila River Police Department. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christina J. Reid-Moore.
Lewis’s crimes are a stark reminder of the violence that can occur on tribal lands. The Gila River Indian Community has struggled with high rates of crime in recent years.
