East St. Louis Man Sentenced to 37 Months in Prison for Gun Possession
James J. Young, a 21-year-old from East St. Louis, Illinois, has been sentenced to 37 months in prison for possessing a firearm as a felon, according to court documents.
Young, who was on parole and living with his mother in public housing in East St. Louis, was found to be in possession of a Glock Model 27, .40 caliber pistol, loaded with 13 rounds during a parole compliance check on May 1, 2014.
This is not Young’s first run-in with the law. He had previously been convicted of Attempted Residential Burglary, a serious crime that demonstrates his willingness to disregard the law and put innocent lives at risk.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Illinois Department of Corrections Parole Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Laura Reppert.
Young’s sentence is a just one, given the severity of his crime. Possessing a firearm as a felon is a serious offense that puts himself and others at risk of harm. His sentence serves as a reminder that our community will not tolerate such behavior.
Young will serve 37 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. This punishment is a necessary step in keeping our community safe and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
