James LaFrance, 65, of Dalton, Massachusetts, is headed to federal prison for 16 years after admitting to sexually exploiting two teenage girls online. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni in Springfield, marks the end of a grim case rooted in manipulation, digital predation, and abuse of trust.
LaFrance pleaded guilty on July 9, 2021, to four counts of sexual exploitation of children. Federal prosecutors detailed how he used internet platforms to befriend a 16-year-old girl from Massachusetts, then coerced her into performing sexually explicit acts during video chats. He recorded the sessions and directed her actions, turning private moments into criminal evidence.
Just months later, in July 2019, LaFrance repeated the same predatory pattern with another 16-year-old girl—this time from Pennsylvania. Again, he orchestrated explicit video chats, issuing instructions and capturing the abuse on his computer. The near-identical nature of the crimes reveals a calculated, repeat offender exploiting the anonymity of the digital world.
Acting U.S. Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell announced the sentencing alongside top law enforcement officials, including Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Matthew B. Millhollin and police chiefs from Dalton, Marblehead, and Newbury. The coordinated response underscores the multi-jurisdictional reach required to combat modern child exploitation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex J. Grant, who prosecuted the case out of the Springfield Branch Office, emphasized that online predators like LaFrance will be tracked down and punished. “These crimes leave lasting scars,” Grant stated. “We’re not looking away. We’re coming after every predator who thinks the internet makes them invisible.”
The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, the Department of Justice’s nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to dismantle networks of child sexual abuse. Federal and local agencies collaborate under the program to identify victims, rescue them, and put offenders behind bars. More information is available at www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
