New York – In a bold move to safeguard the rights of New Yorkers, Attorney General Letitia James announced today the launch of the Legal Observation Project. This initiative by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) aims to monitor and document the actions of federal immigration authorities across the state to protect the rights of residents.
The project will involve trained legal observers dispatched by the OAG to record significant law enforcement activities, including any related protests as they occur. These neutral ground witnesses will collect data that could be critical for future legal actions. The project comes in response to the rising tide of federal immigration control operations across the nation, ensuring accurate and real-time information is collected and preserved while identifying any potential legal violations.
‘As Attorney General, I am proud to protect the constitutional rights of New Yorkers to freely express themselves, peacefully protest, and live their lives without fear of illegal federal actions,’ said Attorney General James. ‘We have seen in Minnesota how quickly and tragically operations can intensify when there is a lack of transparency and accountability. My office is launching the Legal Observation Project to examine the activity of federal law enforcement in New York and determine if these efforts stay within legal bounds.’
The project, staffed by OAG employees who volunteer for this role, will begin on-site monitoring in the coming weeks. When necessary, the OAG will send two legal observers wearing distinctive purple safety vests with the OAG logo to observe and document police actions. The observers will not interfere with the activities of immigration authorities but are there solely to document law enforcement conduct safely and legally.
As the chief law enforcement officer in New York, Attorney General James is responsible for enforcing the law and protecting civil rights and constitutional freedoms of all New Yorkers. The Legal Observation Project will support this mission by ensuring that the OAG has timely and accurate information to evaluate whether law enforcement activities comply with local, state, and federal laws.
Attorney General James also encourages New Yorkers to submit videos or other documentation of immigration authority actions directly to the OAG through its secure online portal. Reports submitted through this portal will help the OAG assess the situation in real-time and determine if further investigation or direct observation is warranted.
The Legal Observation Project is the latest effort by Attorney General James to protect the rights of New Yorkers against illegal federal activity. The OAG has published guidelines for police agencies, healthcare providers, non-profit organizations, schools, and places of worship to ensure compliance with the initiative.
