A devastating case of child abuse has come to light in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, where a father’s neglect of his minor son has led to a 10-year prison sentence.
James Lawrence Shangreaux, Sr., a 34-year-old resident of Pine Ridge, was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, followed by 3 years of supervised release, by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, on May 18, 2017.
Shangreaux was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
According to court documents, Shangreaux was charged with Felony Child Abuse and Neglect on November 3, 2015. He pleaded guilty to the charges on January 3, 2017.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah B. Collins and Megan J. Poppen prosecuted the case, bringing the perpetrator to justice.
Shangreaux was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
