Letitia James Fights for Legal Aid Funding, New York NY, 2023

New York – The unyielding voice of Letitia James, New York’s Attorney General, echoed across Capitol Hill as she joined a resolute bipartisan coalition of 39 attorneys general. Together, they dispatched a call to action, imploring the halls of Congress to uphold the lifeline of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) in their upcoming appropriations bills.

The LSC, an institution that has stood as a beacon for justice for over five decades, doles out grants across all states and territories. These grants enable individuals ensnared by civil cases of all stripes to find much-needed legal assistance. James and her coalition argue that these funds are not just a financial lifeline but the backbone of justice for the underserved.

“Funding for the Legal Services Corporation ensures that every American, regardless of their location or income level, can seek justice,” James stated. “LSC supports organizations championing the rights of the most vulnerable among us, from eviction-battling tenants to families rebuilding post-natural disaster.”

The LSC’s reach is vast. It operates a network of 130 independent legal aid organizations across 900 offices in the United States, serving millions with legal needs ranging from veterans’ benefits to rural area legal services. In 2023 alone, LSC’s support touched over 100,000 New Yorkers, including 1,800 veterans and survivors of domestic violence.

“Without investment in LSC,” James continues, “countless rural families would find themselves without legal assistance in the face of life-altering challenges.” The letter also highlights that 95 percent of LSC’s funding is distributed directly to the organizations aiding Americans.

This chorus of support includes attorneys general from across the nation, including Alaska, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia. Their unified stance underscores the critical role LSC plays in safeguarding access to justice for all.”
