A Natchitoches man has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for his role in an illegal drug conspiracy, according to a joint investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
James R. Smith Jr., 39, of Natchitoches, La., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Donald Walter for one count of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and methamphetamine.
Smith was also sentenced to three years of supervised release. According to evidence presented at the May 16, 2014 guilty plea, Smith conspired with others from 2010 to 2013 to distribute and possess powder cocaine and methamphetamine in Caddo Parish, Bossier Parish, Vernon Parish and Houston, Texas.
Authorities recorded Smith selling another man 1 pound of methamphetamine as part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation called Operation Styrofoam Cookies.
The OCDETF program is a joint federal, state and local cooperative approach to combat drug trafficking and is the nation’s primary tool for disrupting and dismantling major drug trafficking organizations.
Assistant U.S. Attorney James G. Cowles prosecuted the case, bringing Smith to justice for his role in the conspiracy.
This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of illegal drug trafficking and the importance of our ongoing efforts to combat it.
