James R. Stewart, Methamphetamine Possession, West Virginia 2022

A Philadelphia man has been charged with having a large amount of methamphetamine near a West Virginia university, the U.S. Attorney’s office announced.

James R. Stewart, 36, was indicted on one count of ‘Possession with Intent to Distribute 50 Grams of More of Methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a Protected Location.’

According to the indictment, Stewart had more than 50 grams of methamphetamine near Wheeling University in Ohio County in November 2022.

The protected location is a university, which is a location that is subject to enhanced penalties for drug crimes under federal law.

Stewart faces at least five years and up to 80 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $10 million. The actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn M. Adkins on behalf of the government. The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Ohio Valley Drug Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, investigated the case.

An indictment is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
