Florida Man Sentenced for Telemarketing Scam in Illinois

Winter Park, FL resident James Richard Currey, 55, has been put behind bars for his role in a multi-million dollar telemarketing scam that targeted consumers across the United States and Canada.

Currey was sentenced in federal court to one year in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $67,137.50 in restitution to the individual victims and a $100 special assessment.

The scam, which was run by companies including National Solutions and related entities, used fictitious names to deceive timeshare owners into making payments. The companies targeted over 2,500 consumers, bilking them out of at least $6 million.

According to court filings, the scam used names such as Bluescape Timeshares International, Country Wide Timeshares, Countrywide Timeshares MA, Landmark Timeshares, Propertys Direct, Quicksale Propertys, Sun Property Networks, Sun Property’s, Universal Propertys, VIM Timeshares, Propertys DRK, Quick Sale Advisers, Quick Sale International, City Resorts, Resort Advisers, American Timeshares, Exit Week, and Resort Advisors International.

The investigation into the scam was led by the Midwest Region Office of the Federal Trade Commission and the St. Louis Field Office of the Chicago Division of the United States Postal Inspection Service.

Assistant United States Attorneys William E. Coonan and Michael Hallock handled the prosecution of the case. The sentencing marks one of nearly 100 timeshare resale fraud prosecutions brought in the Southern District of Illinois over the past four years.
