ABINGDON, Va. – James Sebastian, 48, is headed to federal prison for 14 years – 168 months, to be exact – after being sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court. Sebastian was the final piece in a sprawling methamphetamine distribution network that pumped the deadly drug from the West Coast into the veins of Southwest Virginia and beyond.
The case, dubbed “Operation California Dreaming,” began in early 2017 and quickly exposed a sophisticated operation involving 28 individuals spread across California, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee. Federal prosecutors say the crew wasn’t just dealing dope; they were also allegedly involved with firearms. Acting United States Attorney Daniel P. Bubar stated the sentencing “ought to send a message of our commitment to dismantling drug trafficking organizations responsible for dealing this deadly narcotic.” A message, perhaps, delivered with a hefty prison sentence.
Sebastian pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine and one count of distribution of methamphetamine. He wasn’t alone. A parade of co-conspirators have already been sentenced, with punishments ranging from a relatively light 60 months to a staggering 300 months behind bars. The feds clearly weren’t playing around. Jair Medina Gutierrez remains at large, a fugitive from justice.
The sentencing breakdown reads like a who’s who of drug offenders now facing long stretches in federal lockup. Sean Phillip Maidlow received 300 months for conspiracy. Lacey Cheri Weir also got 300 months. Andrea Nichole Stickel, 210 months. James Nicholas Howington and Joshua Todd Chapman each received 168 months, matching Sebastian’s sentence. James Robert Johnson – 151 months. Donald Zachary Snyder, facing additional firearms charges, received a massive 270 months. The list goes on.
Other sentences handed down include: Stephen A. Graham (84 months), Christopher Lee Smiley (64 months), Saleemah Lashawn Roberson (108 months), Larry Levi Bennett (235 months), Terry Melvin Dalton (120 months), Heather Ashley Davis (120 months), Brianna Nicole Woodby (60 months), Donald Shane Hawthorne (144 months), Gary Lee McFarlane (135 months), Elizabeth Pauline Eaton (168 months), and Matthew Todd Mullins (188 months) – who also faced charges related to counterfeiting U.S. currency.
While Sebastian’s sentencing marks the end of this particular case, it’s a grim reminder that the methamphetamine trade continues to poison communities across Southwest Virginia. Bubar’s office promises to keep the pressure on, but the relentless demand for the drug ensures that new organizations will inevitably rise to take the place of the old. The cycle of addiction and crime continues, and the feds are left to mop up the mess, one 14-year sentence at a time.
