New York Attorney General Letitia James is leading the charge against the Trump administration’s controversial moves to restrict funding under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
In a bold move, AG James has joined forces with 20 other attorneys general in filing an amicus brief. The legal action targets the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) recent requirement that organizations receiving VAWA funds must certify they will not use those funds for services conflicting with the administration’s political agenda.
“For decades, the Violence Against Women Act has been a lifeline for survivors,” AG James stated. “This admin’s illegal attempts to meddle with these funds put our most vulnerable at risk.”
The brief argues that the DOJ’s new requirements are illegal and threaten to undermine public safety by chilling VAWA-funded organizations’ ability to serve those in need, including members of the LGBTQ community and immigrants without legal status.
VAWA programs have played a crucial role in reducing domestic violence by 64 percent since 1994. The funding supports training for law enforcement, medical care, hotlines, shelters, and services for survivors.
The coalition is urging the court to issue a preliminary injunction against the DOJ’s guidelines, aiming to protect the essential resources that have helped keep communities safe.
