Pittsburgh Man Faces 10 Years in Prison After Guilty Plea to Child Pornography Charge

A 28-year-old Pittsburgh man is facing a lengthy prison sentence after admitting to possessing child pornography. James Stover, formerly of Pittsburgh, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor in federal court.

According to the guilty plea, Stover knowingly possessed videos and images in computer graphic files on or about August 15, 2013. The files depicted minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct, some of whom had not yet attained the age of 12.

Stover’s guilty plea was entered before United States District Judge Gustave Diamond. The court scheduled sentencing for May 12, 2015. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based on the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history of the defendant.

Assistant United States Attorney Jessica Lieber Smolar is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Stover.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Stover faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. The case is a stark reminder of the importance of protecting children from exploitation and abuse.
