A New Orleans man was sentenced to 13 months in prison for violating the Federal Gun Control Act.
In a federal court, Chief United States District Court Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown sentenced James Van Cleave, 36, to 13 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence was handed down on January 19, 2023.
According to court records, Van Cleave previously pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1). The conviction dates back to 2007 for assault with a deadly weapon. On August 18, 2021, Van Cleave was found to be in possession of a firearm.
As part of his sentence, Van Cleave must serve three years of supervised release following his prison term. He was also ordered to pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. This initiative brings together law enforcement and the community to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Greg Kennedy.
