New York – In a bold move against the Trump administration, New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit seeking to block its efforts to restrict gender-affirming health care for transgender and nonbinary youth.
Attorney General James is leading a coalition of 15 states and the District of Columbia in this legal challenge. The coalition argues that the federal campaign to intimidate healthcare providers into halting treatment for minors under 19 years old is unconstitutional and violates the rights of transgender youth.
The lawsuit highlights the administration’s executive orders, signed by President Trump on his first day in office, which sought to limit recognition of gender beyond two sexes and eliminate federal support for what it termed ‘gender ideology.’ The order also characterized standard medical care as ‘chemical and surgical mutilation,’ despite it being evidence-based and widely accepted among medical professionals.
Attorney General James and the coalition assert that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has overstepped its bounds, issuing threats, launching investigations, demanding private patient data, and issuing subpoenas to healthcare providers across the country. They argue that these actions are designed to intimidate and suppress care rather than enforce the law.
Medical experts uniformly support gender-affirming care as safe and necessary for transgender youth, with major medical associations confirming its importance in treating gender dysphoria. The lawsuit points out that denying access to such care can lead to increased rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidality among transgender youth.
The administration’s campaign has already caused providers to scale back services, raising concerns about the well-being of transgender youth across the country. Attorney General James vows to fight for the dignity, safety, and rights of the transgender community, emphasizing that they will not stand by while young lives are put at risk.
