Newark, N.J. – In a gritty turn of events, Jamil King, 32, from Jersey City, was convicted today on charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, announced U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
King faced a two-day trial before U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas in Newark federal court, where the jury took just two hours to return a guilty verdict. The case against King was built on evidence that included approximately 50 grams of cocaine recovered from his apartment during a July 8, 2022, police raid.
The search warrant for King’s residence led law enforcement to recover the drugs from within sweatpants that contained his DNA, linking them to clothing he wore on the night of the offense. The street gang member is known as a high-ranking figure in the Parkside neighborhood gang.
King, now facing up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, will be sentenced on Oct. 23, 2024. U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger commended the efforts of the Jersey City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for the Newark Field Division in securing this conviction.
This investigation was part of the Jersey City Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), a collaborative effort established in 2018 to combat violent crime. The initiative involves federal, state, county, and city agencies working together to prioritize the prosecution of violent offenders who threaten community safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Desiree Grace and Joseph Stern represented the government during King’s trial.
