HAMMOND, Indiana – Jared Washington, a 33-year-old resident of Hammond, has been brought to justice for his role in a heroin trafficking operation in the area.
On May 2024, Washington was sentenced to 110 months in prison by United States District Court Judge James T. Moody after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute heroin.
According to court documents, Washington and a co-defendant were involved in selling heroin in and around Hammond, Indiana, over a prolonged period of time. Investigators, assisted by a confidential informant, conducted a series of controlled purchases of heroin from Washington, which ultimately led to the seizure of large amounts of cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, and drug proceeds from a hotel room used by Washington.
Fentanyl, a synthetic opiate, is 30-50 times more potent than heroin, making it a highly dangerous substance. Washington’s actions not only put his own life at risk but also endangered the lives of countless others in the community.
This case was investigated by the Lake County HIDTA DEA task force, with the assistance of the Hammond Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Thomas M. McGrath prosecuted the case.
The sentence handed down to Washington serves as a warning to those involved in similar activities: the consequences of heroin trafficking are severe and will be met with the full force of the law.
In addition to the prison sentence, Washington will also serve three years of supervised release following his incarceration.
