Jarez Baron a/k/a “Little Bro,” 28, of Newark, is headed to federal prison for 40 months after admitting his role in a relentless heroin and oxycodone distribution scheme run out of a downtown clothing store. The sentence, handed down today by U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares, marks the fall of a key player in a drug operation that turned Ballas Boutique into a notorious open-air market for narcotics.
Baron pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin, admitting that between February 2013 and August 7, 2013, he and others used the storefront as a hub for over 35 controlled sales to a confidential source. Nearly all of the transactions were captured on audio and video, painting a damning picture of a slick, repeat-offender operation masked as a fashion outlet in the heart of Newark.
Court documents reveal that intercepted wiretaps—authorized under federal court orders—exposed Baron and fellow employees acting as street-level dealers for Lamont Vaughn, 33, also of Newark. The recordings detailed drug pickups, sales, and cash handoffs, confirming that Ballas Boutique was less about threads and more about trafficking.
The operation ended in a flash on August 7, 2013, when federal and state agents raided both the boutique and the defendants’ home. They seized dozens of oxycodone pills, two firearms, and a significant amount of cash—evidence that sealed the fates of those involved. The weapons and narcotics stockpile underscored the violent potential lurking behind the retail façade.
Baron will now serve three years of supervised release following his prison term. He was represented by Frank P. Arleo Esq. of West Orange, New Jersey. Co-defendant Lamont Vaughn, who ran the ring, pleaded guilty on June 22, 2016, to drug conspiracy and being a felon in possession of two firearms, and was sentenced to 65 months on October 5, 2016. Felicia Holt, 30, also of Newark, pleaded guilty to heroin distribution conspiracy on March 11, 2014, and was sentenced to 45 months on November 17, 2016.
U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman credited the FBI and the N.J. State Police Street Gangs North Unit for their relentless investigation. Prosecution was handled by Special Litigation Counsel Margaret Ann Mahoney and Assistant U.S. Attorney Francisco J. Navarro. This takedown is a stark reminder: in Newark’s shadow economy, even the trendiest fronts can’t hide the truth for long.
