Jackson, TN – In a resounding affirmation of justice, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a 228-month federal prison sentence for Jason Autry, a 50-year-old felon with a chilling history. Autry was convicted on firearm offenses in the Western District of Tennessee, a conviction that followed his release from prison for the heinous murder of nursing student Holly Bobo.
Autry’s journey through the criminal justice system is as dark as it gets. After serving time for being a felon in possession of a gun and for his role in Bobo’s kidnapping and murder, Autry was released on September 16, 2020. However, his return to prison became inevitable just 25 days later when he was caught with a stolen firearm. Within 78 days, he again came into possession of guns and ammunition.
In November 2022, Autry pleaded guilty to three counts of being a felon in possession of guns and ammunition. The U.S. District Judge S. Thomas Anderson sentenced him to 228 months for these gun offenses, taking into account Autry’s extensive and egregious criminal history.
The appeals court emphasized the severity of Autry’s past, which included aggravated assault, drug trafficking, burglary, active membership in a violent gang, and his admitted participation in Bobo’s abduction and murder. His reputation as a violent individual in his community was well-earned, with reports of violence towards family members, romantic partners, and even during prison sentences.
The case was meticulously investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Benton County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Beth Boswell and Josh Morrow prosecuted Autry on behalf of the government, with AUSA Naya Bedini assisting at sentencing and handling the appeal.
