Jason Kimmel, a 39-year-old man from Rosebud, South Dakota, has been charged with Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, a federal crime that carries severe penalties.
According to a federal indictment, Kimmel was required to register as a sex offender due to his 2005 conviction for Sexual Abuse of a Minor. However, between February 10, 2021, and April 1, 2021, Kimmel allegedly failed to properly register and update his registration as a sex offender.
The maximum penalty for this crime is up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, five years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
