Convicted Sex Offender Fails to Register in Rosebud, South Dakota
A 40-year-old man from Rosebud, South Dakota, has been sentenced for his role in failing to register as a sex offender, a crime that landed him in federal prison. Jason Kimmel, Sr., was sentenced on February 28, 2022, by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, to a total of 31 months in federal prison, running concurrently with an 18-month prison sentence in another case.
Kimmel was also ordered to serve five years of supervised release and pay a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. This is not the first time Kimmel has found himself in trouble for his actions. In 2005, he was convicted of Sexual Abuse of a Minor and was required to register as a sex offender. However, between February 10, 2021, and April 1, 2021, Kimmel failed to properly register as a sex offender, updating his registration as required under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
Kimmel was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 13, 2021, and pled guilty on November 22, 2021. The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley. After the sentencing, Kimmel was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
