Assaulting Federal Officers and Firearm Possession Violations Lead to Indictment in South Dakota

A federal grand jury has taken a major step in bringing a violent offender to justice by indicting Jason Todd Garreau, a 27-year-old Eagle Butte man, on multiple charges. The indictment, handed down on November 5, 2013, brings to light a disturbing pattern of disregard for federal authority and reckless behavior.

According to the indictment, Garreau has been charged with Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding Federal Officers, Possession of a Firearm During a Crime of Violence, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. These serious allegations warrant a maximum penalty of up to life imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine, as well as 5 years of supervised release and an additional 3 years of supervised release upon revocation.

The investigation into Garreau’s activities has been a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and several other law enforcement agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges has been assigned to prosecute the case, which is currently pending in federal court.

Garreau appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on November 8, 2013, and pled not guilty to the indictment. He was subsequently remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, pending further proceedings in the case. A trial date has not yet been set.

The charges brought against Garreau are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
