A Monmouth, Oregon man has been sentenced to federal prison for distributing fentanyl that caused the overdose death of a teenager in Salem, Oregon.

Javen James Pedro, 21, was sentenced to 75 months in federal prison and six years’ supervised release, after admitting to selling ten counterfeit Oxycodone pills containing fentanyl to a 15-year-old teenager.

On February 24, 2022, officers from the Salem Police Department responded to an overdose of the teenager, who died after consuming the counterfeit pills in front of several other juveniles. Investigators obtained video surveillance footage showing the minor victim completing a drug transaction with Pedro.

Pedro was arrested in Monmouth and later charged by criminal complaint with distributing fentanyl. A federal grand jury in Portland indicted him on the same charge on March 17, 2022.

Pedro pleaded guilty to a one-count superseding criminal information charging him with distributing a controlled substance to a person under the age of 21 on February 6, 2024. This case was investigated by the Salem Police Department and prosecuted by Scott M. Kerin, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.

The tragic overdose death of the teenager serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl trafficking and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
