Javen James Pedro, Fentanyl Distribution, Oregon 2024

A Monmouth, Oregon man has been sentenced to federal prison for his role in a fatal fentanyl overdose of a 15-year-old teenager in Salem, Oregon.

Javen James Pedro, 21, of Monmouth, was sentenced to 75 months in federal prison and six years of supervised release after pleading guilty to distributing a controlled substance to a person under the age of 21.

The overdose occurred on February 24, 2022, after the minor victim purchased and consumed counterfeit Oxycodone pills containing fentanyl. Investigators obtained video surveillance footage showing the minor victim completing a drug transaction with Pedro, who admitted to selling the pills to the victim approximately five to ten times previously.

According to court documents, Pedro was charged by criminal complaint with distributing fentanyl on February 24, 2022, and later indicted by a federal grand jury in Portland on March 17, 2022.

The Salem Police Department investigated the case, and it was prosecuted by Scott M. Kerin, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.

“This sentence holds Javen James Pedro accountable for his role in the tragic overdose death of a 15-year-old teenager,” said Kerin. “Fentanyl is a highly addictive and deadly substance, and those who distribute it to minors will face the full force of the law.”

The case highlights the ongoing struggle with fentanyl trafficking and the devastating consequences it has on communities. As the nation grapples with the opioid epidemic, it is crucial that those responsible for distributing these substances are held accountable.
