Laredo Man Accused of Unlawful Possession of Over 100 Firearms
A 72-year-old Laredo resident has been taken into custody and charged with unlawful possession of more than 100 firearms, despite being a convicted felon. According to Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez, the indictment against Javier J. Trevino was returned by a federal grand jury on November 21, 2017.
Trevino was found in possession of 123 firearms on August 20, 2016. The firearms allegedly included handguns, rifles with high capacity magazines, and shotguns. As a convicted felon, Trevino is prohibited from possessing a firearm under federal law.
The indictment alleges that Trevino’s possession of the firearms is a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1), which prohibits individuals convicted of a felony from possessing a firearm. If convicted, Trevino faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
The investigation into Trevino’s activities was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with the assistance of the Webb County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher dos Santos is prosecuting the case.
Trevino made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Diana Song Quiroga today, after being taken into custody yesterday. An indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. Trevino is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.
As the case moves forward, Trevino’s fate will be decided in the courts. The prosecution will have to prove the allegations made against him, and Trevino’s defense will be able to present their case in his defense. Only time will tell what the outcome of this case will be.
