An enterprising kid stumbled upon a nasty surprise in his bedroom – a machine gun conversion device, also known as a ‘switch’, attached to a handgun. The parents of the 15-year-old contacted the Tulsa Police Department, who then called in the ATF. Investigators soon discovered that the kid had bought the firearm at a local gun show, where he met a man who installed the switch. That man turned out to be 25-year-old Derrick Carl Andrew Chatman of Broken Arrow.
Law enforcement searched Chatman’s home and found more than just a few illicit items. They discovered a gun, ammo, and a box with a Chinese shipping label containing firearm switches. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Customs and Border Patrol intercepted another package addressed to Chatman with 15 more machine gun conversion devices.
Chatman had already been charged with state crimes and was under supervision when he was federally indicted. He’s now facing a 24-month sentence, plus a year of supervised release, for his role in the scheme.
The ATF, Tulsa Police Department, and Customs and Border Patrol investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Jolly prosecuting.
