A massive black-market marijuana trafficking ring with roots in Oklahoma has been dismantled, with 51 defendants charged in a 67-count indictment.
The nationwide operation saw thousands of pounds of pot smuggled across state lines, with 29 Chinese nationals among the indicted. Law enforcement seized over 61,000 marijuana plants and 550 kilograms of processed weed, while 13 non-citizens were turned over to immigration officials.
A federal indictment, unsealed last week, implicated defendants from Oklahoma, Texas, New York, North Carolina, Florida, Michigan, Kansas, Mississippi, and California. Agents executed 22 search warrants in Oklahoma and neighboring states, netting a haul worth millions.
U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester vowed to take down such organizations, saying they exploit Oklahoma’s marijuana laws to produce and distribute large quantities of black-market pot.
