A brazen refund fraud scheme targeting online retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target has been busted in Oklahoma’s Northern District. The Artemis Refund Group (ARG) operated from April 2019 to October 2023, defrauding hundreds of customers and placing thousands of refund fraud orders. They advertised their services on online messaging forums, instructing customers to purchase products, collect order info, and initiate fake refunds.
ARG’s scheme involved a variety of tactics to deceive retailers into processing refunds, including fake returns and exchanges. Customers would retain the goods but receive a full refund, with ARG taking a 15-25% cut. Some members also resold the stolen goods on online marketplaces for profit.
Eleven defendants have pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud and are facing imprisonment and supervised release. The scheme caused millions of dollars in losses to the targeted retailers.
The investigation and prosecution of ARG’s refund fraud scheme are a significant blow to online retail crime in the region. The Northern District of Oklahoma has seen a significant reduction in refund fraud activity since the scheme was dismantled.
