Miguel A. Marrero, Shooting Incident, U.S. Virgin Islands 2025

ST. CROIX, VI – A brutal shooting incident on St. Croix has culminated in a heavy sentence for Miguel A. Marrero, 53, who was sentenced by Senior District Judge Wilma A. Lewis on July 2, 2025.

In a grim turn of events, Marrero faced two federal and two territorial charges following an incident on July 4, 2024. The federal charges included 15 years for discharge of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, and 30 months for possessing a firearm as a felon. Territorial charges against him included 12.5 months for assault first degree and four years for assault third degree.

The court ordered that the federal sentences be served consecutively, while the territorial charges were concurrent. Marrero was also sentenced to five years of supervised release.

Court documents revealed a chilling sequence of events leading up to the shooting. On July 4, 2024, in the Candido Guadalupe Terrace housing community, Marrero’s minor son and a female minor clashed physically. The woman, identified as the mother of the female minor, witnessed the altercation and confronted Marrero. A verbal spat escalated into physical altercations, culminating in the mother striking Marrero in the face.

Without hesitation, Marrero drew a firearm and shot the woman in the back. The female minor fled but was pursued by Marrero, who fired twice at her, hitting her leg and ankle. In a frantic escape, Marrero fled the scene. The injured woman was airlifted off island for medical treatment.

Marrero’s history as a convicted felon, with a firearm conviction dating back to June 7, 2000, adds weight to the gravity of his latest offense. The case was meticulously investigated by the Virgin Islands Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations, with Assistant United States Attorney Rhonda Williams-Henry leading the prosecution.
