St. Croix, VI – The grim tale of violence on St. Croix reached a verdict as Miguel A. Marrero, 53, faced the music for his horrifying shooting spree. Today, Senior District Judge Wilma A. Lewis handed down sentences totaling over 17 years’ imprisonment.
Marrero was sentenced to 15 years for discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence and an additional 30 months for possessing a firearm as a felon. He also received 12.5 months for assault first degree and four years for assault third degree, with the federal sentences to be served consecutively and the territorial ones concurrently.
The harrowing incident unfolded at the Candido Guadalupe Terrace housing community on July 4, 2024. Marrero’s minor son and a female minor had a physical altercation, which escalated when Marrero’s wife confronted him. Following an alleged face slap by the mother, Marrero pulled out a gun and shot her in the back, then chased and fired at the fleeing daughter, wounding her leg and ankle.
As a convicted felon with a prior firearm charge, Marrero should have known better. The Virgin Islands Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations worked tirelessly to bring him to justice, which was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rhonda Williams-Henry.
Following the medical evacuation off island for treatment of the injured mother, Judge Lewis also imposed a five-year supervised release on Marrero, ensuring he will remain accountable even after his prison term is served.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence and the severity of consequences faced by those who threaten lives on our islands. The community of St. Croix deserves praise for their resilience in the face of such terror.
