PIERRE, S.D. — A Lower Brule man has been handed a two-year federal prison sentence for his audacious assault on a federal officer during an arrest attempt.
Thaddeus James Grant, 32, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte on June 23, 2025, after he pleaded guilty to Assaulting, Resisting and Impeding a Federal Officer. The sentence includes three years of supervised release following his prison term.
This incident unfolded on September 20, 2024, when Grant actively resisted arrest by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) officers who were trying to execute a federal warrant at the Lower Brule Sioux Indian Reservation. During the scuffle, Grant managed to pull away from the officers and brought one of them to the ground, demonstrating a relentless refusal to comply with their authority.
The struggle only ended when the BIA officers employed pressure points to gain compliance. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen took over the prosecution of this case, which was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services.
Grant’s conviction followed his indictment by a federal grand jury in November 2024 and his guilty plea on March 27, 2025. Along with his sentence, he has been ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Following his conviction, Grant was promptly remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
