MONTICELLO, NY – Jahreek Bush, 29, is headed to federal prison for nearly a decade after being convicted of flooding the streets of Monticello, New York, with deadly fentanyl and cocaine. U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Karas handed down an 117-month sentence today, a reckoning for Bush’s brazen drug dealing and the loaded firearm he carried while doing it.
United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, didn’t mince words: “Jahreek Bush dealt highly dangerous drugs, including fentanyl that he falsely branded as heroin, and he illegally carried a loaded gun while doing so,” Clayton stated. “Armed drug traffickers fuel violence and overdoses in our communities. This Office and our law enforcement partners will work tirelessly to bring to justice those who put innocent lives at risk.”
The case, built on evidence presented during a five-day jury trial, revealed Bush’s operation ran from January through April 2023. He peddled cocaine and fentanyl – deceptively marketed as heroin – throughout Monticello. The bust came on April 25th, when officers from the New York State Police and the Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office caught Bush red-handed at a parking lot drug exchange.
Authorities found Bush sporting a fanny pack stuffed with a loaded 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun, over 100 individually wrapped packages of fentanyl, and additional plastic bags containing more fentanyl and cocaine. The sheer volume of narcotics indicates Bush wasn’t just a small-time dealer; he was a significant supplier preying on the vulnerabilities of others.
Bush was convicted on six counts of distributing or possessing with intent to distribute narcotics and one count of carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. Beyond the 117-month prison term, he’ll face three years of supervised release upon his eventual return to society. Clayton praised the collaborative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, the New York State Police, and the Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office in securing the conviction.
The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Margaret Vasu, Benjamin Levander, and Courtney Heavey of the White Plains Division. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who profit from the misery of addiction, and who escalate the danger with illegal firearms, will face the full weight of federal justice.
