Hammond’s Isaiah Castro, 23, has been handed a severe justice with a 60-month federal prison sentence, followed by 24 months of supervised release. The United States District Court Judge Gretchen S. Lund imposed the sentence after Castro pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Castro’s crime spree reached its climax on April 16, 2024, when he distributed pills laced with fentanyl while armed. His fate was sealed by a search warrant that resulted in the recovery of a firearm, along with additional weaponry, ammunition, and cash. The grim reality was compounded by the fact that Castro had already been convicted of resisting law enforcement and was on probation at the time.
Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor announced the sentence, which is part of a broader initiative aimed at combating violent crime and gun violence. This case has been investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Indiana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force, with Assistant United States Attorney Caitlin M. Padula spearheading the prosecution.
Castro’s conviction is a stark reminder that Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) remains vigilant in its efforts to make neighborhoods safer for everyone. The program, which brings together all levels of law enforcement and communities, is committed to fostering trust and legitimacy while supporting community-based organizations to prevent violence before it occurs.
