FRESNO, Calif.
A former IRS employee has been sentenced to prison for filing multiple fraudulent tax returns, including her own and those of family members.
Kimberly English, 53, of Fresno, was sentenced to 15 months in prison and ordered to pay $33,780 in restitution to the IRS for filing a fraudulent tax return by an employee of the United States and making an opportunity for a person to defraud the United States, Acting United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.
The charges against English included filing fraudulent tax returns for tax years 2011 and 2012, claiming false deductions and credits, such as the number of dependents and eligibility for the child tax credit.
According to court documents and evidence at trial, English prepared and filed her own fraudulent tax returns, as well as those of her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend. The false returns allowed English and other taxpayers to obtain undue tax refunds or improperly reduce their tax liabilities.
“When IRS employees file fraudulent tax returns, the public’s confidence in the IRS is eroded. This unethical and criminal behavior by an IRS employee with knowledge of the system will never be tolerated and will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” stated Special Agent in Charge Rod Ammari of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
Judge Dale A. Drozd ordered English to begin serving her sentence on September 21, 2016.
This case was the product of an investigation by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and the Tax Division. Assistant United States Attorneys Patrick R. Delahunty and Angela L. Scott prosecuted the case.
The charges against English were filed on September 21, 2016, in U.S. District Court in Fresno, California.
