Javier Velasquez Jr., Cocaine Distribution, Florida 2023

CLEWISTON, FL – Javier Velasquez, Jr., 38, of Clewiston, is staring down a potential life sentence after pleading guilty to a slew of federal charges related to drug and firearms trafficking. The bust, a joint effort led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), reveals a dangerous individual brazenly dealing in illegal weapons and narcotics.

According to court documents, Velasquez peddled cocaine to an undercover federal agent between July 13 and September 19, 2023. But the deal wasn’t limited to drugs. Velasquez also sold multiple firearms, and critically, a Glock switch – a device that transforms a semi-automatic pistol into a fully automatic machine gun. This isn’t just about drugs; it’s about escalating the firepower on our streets.

The charges against Velasquez are substantial: two counts of distribution of cocaine, three counts of felon in possession of firearms, one count of illegal possession of a machinegun, and one count of carrying firearms during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. As a convicted felon, Velasquez was already legally prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition. He clearly had no regard for the law.

U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg of the Middle District of Florida announced the guilty plea, stating Velasquez faces a minimum mandatory penalty of five years in federal prison, with the potential for a life sentence. A sentencing date has yet to be determined, but federal prosecutors are expected to push for the maximum penalty given the severity of the crimes and the dangerous devices involved.

This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities. The DOJ launched a strengthened version of PSN in 2021, focusing on building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategic enforcement.

Assistant United States Attorney Mark Morgan is prosecuting the case. While this conviction represents a win for federal investigators, it’s a stark reminder of the constant battle against those who profit from illegal guns and drugs. The ATF’s Tampa Field Division was instrumental in bringing Velasquez to justice, and the Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves towards sentencing.
