Felons Armed: Javonnte Lamhnte Patterson Handled Ammunition in Durham
Durham, North Carolina – A brazen daylight shooting near the Eagle Food Mart on Fayetteville Street and Linwood Avenue sent shockwaves through the community in April 2024. Two men, Javonnte Lamhnte Patterson and Jermal Zamont Moye, are now reaping the consequences of their actions.
Patterson, a 32-year-old Burlington native, was sentenced to 180 months’ imprisonment, plus 3 years of supervised release, on November 10, 2025, after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of ammunition. The crime carries significant penalties for those with prior convictions.
According to court documents, the shooting incident occurred on April 11, 2024, around 5:15 p.m. Police found 38 cartridges and several projectile fragments at the scene, but no guns were recovered. Witnesses described the chaos as Patterson and another unidentified male exchanged gunfire in the crowded parking lot.
Review of video surveillance and ballistics evidence confirmed that 11 casings were ejected from Patterson‘s firearm and 5 casings from Moye‘s. The Durham County Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case, with Assistant United States Attorney Tracy M. Williams-Durham leading the prosecution.
Patterson’s history of convictions includes at least two crimes of violence or controlled substance offenses. Moye, a 22-year-old Durham native, received a 25-42 month state probation revocation sentence, which he is currently serving. He was sentenced to an additional 78 months’ imprisonment to run consecutive to his existing sentence, plus 3 years of supervised release.
The Eagle Food Mart, located at the heart of the incident, has since closed its doors due to the ongoing gun violence in the area. The community remains shaken by the events, and law enforcement continues to crack down on those responsible for such crimes.
The sentencing hearings were held in Greensboro, North Carolina, before United States District Judge William L. Osteen, Jr.
