CHICAGO – Two Chicago men are facing federal murder charges in connection with the brutal killing of Anthony Oliver in the North Lawndale neighborhood last year. Jaylan Williams, 23, and Brandon Cunningham, 21, allegedly conspired to rob Oliver on September 13, 2022, a plan that escalated into deadly violence.
According to a superseding indictment unsealed Tuesday in U.S. District Court, Williams and Cunningham didn’t just rob Oliver – they murdered him during the commission of the crime. The details of the murder remain sealed, but the charges suggest a particularly violent encounter. Federal prosecutors are building a case that points to premeditation and a callous disregard for human life.
The indictment charges both Williams and Cunningham with robbery conspiracy, robbery, and multiple firearm counts, indicating a weapon was used in the commission of the crime. Sources close to the investigation suggest the firearm is central to the federal charges, giving the ATF jurisdiction over the case. Both defendants are currently held without bail, awaiting trial, and considered flight risks.
The case is being spearheaded by Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Morris Pasqual, in collaboration with Christopher Amon, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Division of the ATF, and Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elly M. Peirson is leading the prosecution. This interagency effort highlights the growing cooperation between federal and local law enforcement in tackling Chicago’s violent crime problem.
While the indictment represents a significant step forward, it’s crucial to remember that it’s not a conviction. Williams and Cunningham are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. However, if convicted on the charges, they face a maximum penalty of death – the most severe punishment available under federal law.
The court, however, will adhere to federal sentencing guidelines and statutes when determining the final penalty. This case is a stark reminder of the violence plaguing Chicago’s streets, and the consequences for those who choose to engage in criminal activity. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds, providing updates on the legal proceedings and ensuring accountability for those responsible for Oliver’s death.
