Grimy Times Investigates: Elder Abuse Plagues Washington as Jeff Sessions Pledges Support

In a grim reminder of the dark side of American society, the nation’s elderly population continues to suffer at the hands of predators. On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a somber mood settled over Washington as Attorney General Jeff Sessions vowed to combat the scourge of elder abuse.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans over 65 years of age is projected to nearly double by 2050, reaching 83.7 million. This staggering statistic serves as a stark reminder of the scale of the problem. Studies suggest that 10 percent of seniors may suffer some form of physical abuse, psychological or verbal abuse, sexual abuse, financial exploitation or neglect.

The financial toll of elder abuse is equally devastating, with some studies suggesting that older adults may suffer billions in losses as a result of financial fraud. Moreover, being victimized by financial fraud could lead to higher rates of hospitalization and mortality.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions took to the podium to address the pressing issue, stating, ‘On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Department gives voice to those who have suffered from elder abuse, neglect, fraud and exploitation and commits to supporting those who combat elder mistreatment every day.’

In Washington, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has been working tirelessly to protect seniors from abuse, neglect, fraud and exploitation. U.S. Attorney Annette L. Hayes noted, ‘The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Washington is working with its state, local and tribal partners to protect seniors from abuse, neglect, fraud and exploitation.’

The Department of Justice, through its Elder Justice Initiative, is actively working on multiple fronts to combat elder mistreatment. The Department has aggressively prosecuted mass mailing fraud schemes, such as Jamaican lottery and psychic scams, many of which are international in nature and target seniors.

The initiative also launched 10 regional Elder Justice Task Forces across the country to enhance the ability of federal, state, and local authorities to work together to combat elder financial fraud and to pursue those nursing homes that provide grossly substandard care to their Medicare and Medicaid residents.

Furthermore, the Department actively supports state and local efforts to prevent and combat elder abuse in a variety of ways, including providing resources and assistance to victims and their families, advancing the collective understanding of elder abuse through projects like the Elder Abuse Prevention Demonstration Project, and enhancing state and local efforts to address the growing problem of crime targeting the nation’s seniors.

For those seeking information or assistance, the Elder Justice website, www.elderjustice.gov, is a valuable resource. Additionally, the two-year Elder Justice AmeriCorps program, which received $2 million in Justice Department grant funding, provides legal assistance and support services to victims of elder abuse, neglect and exploitation.

The fight against elder abuse is far from over, but with the unwavering commitment of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the dedicated efforts of law enforcement agencies across the country, there is hope for a brighter future for America’s elderly population.
