Mark Avrey Rudd was arrested today in Jefferson County, Texas, on federal charges for possession of unregistered destructive devices, including multiple homemade bombs, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The charges stem from evidence seized during a targeted investigation into illegal weapons manufacturing.
A criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court outlines that investigators discovered explosive materials and assembled incendiary devices during a search of Rudd’s residence. The devices were constructed using improvised methods and lacked any federal registration, a violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 5861(d).
Rudd appeared in federal court this afternoon, where he was formally advised of the charges against him. He remains in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for later this week. No bond was offered at the initial appearance.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the possession of the devices, but law enforcement sources indicate the investigation is ongoing and may involve potential threats to public safety. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the forensic examination of the materials.
Possession of an unregistered destructive device is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Prosecutors are reviewing whether additional charges will be filed as the investigation expands.
Rudd, whose full name and identity are preserved as Mark Avrey Rudd, is the sole subject of the current complaint. The case highlights ongoing federal scrutiny of domestic weapons manufacturing and the enforcement of arms control statutes in Texas.
