PITTSBURGH – A Clairton man, Jeffrey Carter, is going back to federal prison for violating his supervision on a previous crack cocaine dealing conviction, according to United States Attorney David J. Hickton.
United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer imposed the sentence on Carter, who will serve an additional one year and one day in prison.
The 44-year-old Carter was found to have violated his supervision in several ways, including testing positive for the use of cocaine, marijuana, and opiates on numerous dates, failing to notify his Probation Officer of his contacts with law enforcement, leaving Western Pennsylvania without permission, and changing jobs several times without notifying the Probation Officer.
Assistant United States Attorney Ross E. Lenhardt prosecuted this case on behalf of the government, and U.S. Attorney Hickton commended the United States Probation Office for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Carter.
According to the information presented to the court, Carter’s violations were serious enough to warrant additional time behind bars. Judge Fischer stated that the sentence was sufficient but not greater than necessary to deter others from violating their supervision.
Carter will also receive an additional one year of supervision once he is released from jail, in an effort to help protect the public from future criminal acts of the defendant.
The Clairton man’s case serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating supervision and the importance of adhering to the terms of one’s release.
