Sioux City, Iowa – A man with a history of felony convictions has been convicted of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, according to a federal court verdict. Jerell Wilson, age 30, of Sioux City, Iowa, was found guilty of one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
The conviction comes after a two-day trial in federal court in Sioux City. Wilson was convicted on May 24, 2023, following about two hours of jury deliberations. The evidence at trial revealed that Wilson had been at a crime scene prior to, and after, the crime with a Coach backpack containing multiple firearms. Law enforcement executed a search warrant on Wilson’s home on June 23, 2022, where a loaded gun – with a round in the chamber — was found in his bed, along with the Coach bag and ammunition for multiple guns that were not found in the search.
Wilson refused to attend his own trial. He has previously been convicted of possession of a defaced firearm, 1st degree theft, and eluding resulting in death and homicide by vehicle. Wilson faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and 5 years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Wilson remains in custody of the United States Marshal. The case was investigated by the Sioux City, Iowa Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild.
