A mail handler from Rochester, New York has been brought to justice for stealing millions of dollars in valuable items from the United States Postal Service.
Jeremy Lieberman, 35, was sentenced to five years of probation, including 10 months of confinement at a community confinement center, for stealing diamonds and other valuable items from the mails between January 2013 and May 2013.
Lieberman, who worked as a mail handler, stole more than $128,000 worth of jewels and valuables, which he later sold at area pawn shops to finance an addiction to prescription opiates.
The sentencing is the culmination of an investigation by the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, Eastern Area Field Office, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Monica Weyler.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Field, who handled the case, stated that while working as a mail handler, Lieberman stole valuable items from the mails and sold them to finance his addiction.
Field praised the work of the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, in bringing Lieberman to justice and preventing further thefts.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in preventing mail theft and the consequences of those who engage in such activities.
Lieberman’s sentence sends a strong message that mail theft will not be tolerated and those who commit such crimes will face consequences.
