A 35-year-old Topeka man has been convicted of misusing federal grant funds intended for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
Jeremy M. Wilson, a former employee of the tribe, pleaded guilty to one count of misapplying federal funds, which he used to purchase sports memorabilia. According to court documents, Wilson misappropriated thousands of dollars in federal grant funds meant for the tribe’s benefit.
The incident occurred in 2023, when Wilson was still employed by the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. During his tenure, he had access to federal grant funds meant for various projects and initiatives. Instead of using the funds as intended, Wilson diverted them for personal gain, purchasing sports memorabilia with the ill-gotten funds.
The total amount of misused funds has not been disclosed. However, Wilson’s actions have been deemed a serious offense by the authorities, and he has been held accountable for his actions.
Wilson’s guilty plea marks a significant development in the case, which has been under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas.
Jeremy M. Wilson is currently facing a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, as well as a fine of up to $250,000, and restitution in an unspecified amount. A sentencing date has not been set at this time.
