In a shocking turn of events, Jeremy T. Walker, 33, of Jackson, Mississippi, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm on Tuesday, after a two-day trial before U.S. District Judge William H. Barbour, Jr.
The guilty verdict was announced by U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst and Dana Nichols, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives. Walker’s conviction stems from the recovery of an AK-style firearm with an obliterated serial number from a residence on Belvedere Road in Jackson, Mississippi, on February 5, 2013.
At the time of the arrest, Walker was also found to be in possession of a 30-round magazine. The defendant had previously been convicted in Hinds County of Possession of a Controlled Substance in 2010.
Walker was initially charged by a federal grand jury on September 9, 2014, and had been on the run as a fugitive until his arrest on April 11, 2018. He is currently facing a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the United States Marshal Service, and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Erin Chalk and Kimberly Purdie are prosecuting the case.
Walker is scheduled to be sentenced on November 27, 2018, at 11:00 am. The community is left to wonder what led to Walker’s decision to possess a firearm as a convicted felon, and the potential consequences he may face as a result of his actions.
