JERMAINE DEMAUL CATHEY FACES 15 YEARS IN PRISON FOR FELON IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM

Huntington, W.Va. – A Columbus, Ohio man pleaded guilty today to being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Will Thompson. Jermaine Demaul Cathey, 43, faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.

Cathey pleaded guilty today in the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia before United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers. According to court documents and statements made in court, Cathey was arrested on April 20, 2023, by law enforcement officers conducting a traffic stop in Huntington. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded SCCY model CPX-1 9mm pistol under the center console.

Cathey admitted to possessing the firearm, despite being a convicted felon. His prior felony convictions include aggravated robbery in Franklin County, Ohio, being a felon in possession of a firearm and attempting to commit a felony in Cabell County Circuit Court, and being a felon in possession of a firearm in the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in our communities. The program brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to foster trust and legitimacy, support community-based organizations, set focused enforcement priorities, and measure results.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Huntington Police Department collaborated on the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie Taylor is prosecuting the case.

Cathey is scheduled to be sentenced on December 2, 2024. The case is part of an ongoing effort to reduce violent crime and gun violence in our communities.
