CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In a federal court hearing, Jerome Anthony Smith, a 42-year-old Williamson man, received a harsh sentence of eight years and four months in federal prison for a heroin charge. United States Attorney Carol Casto announced the sentencing.
Smith pleaded guilty to distribution of heroin in a plea agreement that also included additional drug deals he admitted to participating in. The controlled purchases, conducted by a confidential informant working with law enforcement, revealed that Smith distributed both heroin and crack in the Williamson area between May and August 2014.
According to the investigation, Smith engaged in several drug deals with the confidential informant during the specified period. As part of the plea agreement, Smith admitted to the charged drug trafficking conduct and additional deals.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Route 119 Drug Task Force and the Mingo County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Rada Herrald handled the prosecution.
United States District Judge Thomas E. Johnston imposed the sentence in the federal court hearing.
This case is part of the ongoing effort led by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs and heroin. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, along with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, is committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down illegal pill trafficking, eliminating open-air drug markets, and curtailing the spread of opiate painkillers and heroin in communities across the Southern District.
Jerome Anthony Smith, 42, will serve the eight years and four months in federal prison for distributing heroin in Williamson, West Virginia, from May to August 2014. The U.S. Attorney’s Office continues to work towards eradicating the problem of heroin distribution in the region.
