Jerome Frank Brown, 50, of Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, is staring down life behind bars after a federal grand jury indicted him on charges tied to 400 grams or more of fentanyl and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. The superseding indictment, unsealed in Pittsburgh, marks the latest escalation in a federal crackdown on deadly drug distribution and illegal gun use.
The two-count indictment alleges Brown possessed the massive quantity of fentanyl with intent to distribute on August 19, 2021. On that same day, he also possessed a firearm and ammunition—actions strictly barred under federal law due to his prior felony conviction, which carried a potential sentence of more than one year in prison.
Federal authorities stress that convicted felons are prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under any circumstance. Brown’s alleged actions not only violated that law but also flooded the streets with a lethal synthetic opioid responsible for tens of thousands of overdose deaths nationwide.
If convicted, Brown faces a maximum sentence of life in prison and a fine of $10,250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the final penalty will hinge on the severity of the offenses and Brown’s criminal history, which prosecutors say will weigh heavily in sentencing.
The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, and U.S. Postal Inspectors Service (USPIS). Their joint operation culminated in the superseding indictment, reflecting coordinated pressure on drug traffickers who arm themselves in the course of distribution.
Assistant United States Attorney Douglas C. Maloney is prosecuting the case. Brown remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. No trial date has been set.
