A Louisiana father and son duo has been found guilty of felony murder in connection with a 2017 armored car robbery that resulted in the death of a guard.
Jerome Kieffer, 24, and his father Armstead Kieffer, 53, of New Orleans were convicted of conspiracy to commit bank robbery, armed bank robbery, use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, armed bank robbery resulting in death, murder, making false statements to federal grand jury, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The jury delivered the guilty verdict after a trial before United States District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle. The Kiefers had planned and executed two armored car robberies, one in 2015 and another in 2017. In the 2015 robbery, they stole money from a Chase Bank on N. Board, while the 2017 attempt resulted in the death of Loomis guard James McBride.
According to prosecutors, Jerome Kieffer had rented an apartment overlooking the scene of the attempted robbery and had seen an armored car servicing the ATMs in the weeks prior to the robbery. He and co-defendant Deltoine Scott borrowed a distinctive black and white truck from Scott’s grandfather on the day of the attempted robbery. Scott met with Jerome Kieffer and Armstead Kieffer to plan the robbery, with Armstead Kieffer acting as the lookout.
The Kiefers face a mandatory life sentence. Sentencing will be held before United States District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle in approximately 90 days.
U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorneys David Haller and Michael McMahon are in charge of the prosecution.
The case is a stark reminder of the consequences of violent crime and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to bring perpetrators to justice. The Kiefers’ actions resulted in the loss of a life and caused significant harm to the community.
